The Northern Territory ICPA was well represented at the recent 53rd annual Federal Conference in Sydney, with a delegation of ten members from the State Council and all three NT Branches. Several other NT members also attended, creating a vibrant and engaged group. This impressive turnout reflected the NT’s commitment to the national parent community.

The conference program was impressive, with Rory Treweeke AM, Federal Life Member officially opening the conference, who took us on an ICPA trip down memory lane. The Regional Education Commissioner, The Hon Fiona Nash, addressed the Conference and told us of her work, challenges, and hopes for geographically isolated learners.

Day one of the conference featured keynote speaker, Jana Pittman, a World Athletic Champion and a single Mum for many years to six wonderful children. Jana wowed everyone with her warm and heartfelt anecdotes of the challenges and milestones in her athletics journey to gold medals.

Industry experts discussed topics such as artificial intelligence, regional education, and technology:

  • Julian Moore of Strategic Memberships Solutions
  • Wendy Mason of the Country Education Foundation
  • Richard Stokes of the Australian Boarding Schools Association
  • Jennifer Medway of the Regional Tech Hub
  • Duncan Taylor of the Country University Centre
  • Gavin Williams of NBN
  • Lyndall Stoyles of Telstra Executive Legal and Regulatory, Government and Sustainability.

There were 102 motions presented which provided for some robust discussions with two motions going to the vote – one was so close it had to be counted twice.  Thank you to the ABSA scrutineers for conducting this.  Ultimately, 100 motions were carried.

ICPA previously created a Geographically Isolated Distance Education Day (GIDE) to raise DE awareness which for the past couple of years has been on 1 December.  Federal Council has decided to revamp this to gain stronger recognition as the Rural and Remote Education Day (RRED) and this day to be on 12 September each year.  This will avoid being lost in the end of school year and Christmas activities.  More information coming soon.

The AGM saw two Territorians elected to positions on the Federal Council.  Melissa Kerr who recently joined the Federal Council was elected as Federal Council’s Treasurer and Amber Driver was elected as a Federal Councillor.  Congratulations ladies: it is terrific to have the NT represented once again on the Federal Council, bringing the NT's often unique perspective to all things affecting families in the education of their children.

The conference was a resounding success, with attendees enjoying a packed schedule of informative sessions, networking opportunities, and social events. The pre-conference function at Doltone House, the conference dinner at NSW Parliament House, and the post-conference function at the Glenmore Hotel provided memorable experiences for all.

The conference was held at Doltone House, providing an elegant and memorable venue for delegates and guests. The social events, including a pre-conference cocktail party and a post-conference function, offered opportunities for networking and enjoying Sydney's iconic views.

The NT ICPA delegates were impressed by the conference organization and the quality of the catering. The free barista cart was a particular hit, providing a variety of beverages to suit all tastes.
