“That ICPA Qld lobbies the Department of Education (DoE) to mandate a transparent, timely and enforceable process for managing complaints against staff, ensuring that all substantiated breaches of policy result in clear accountability and appropriate disciplinary action.”
Incidents involving alleged breaches of policy especially around zero tolerance toward abuse by departmental staff must be managed with consistency, transparency and accountability. Where complaints are substantiated, there must be clear evidence and feedback that appropriate action has been taken to uphold departmental standards and protect student wellbeing.
Recently in a rural primary school there was a breach of privacy by a head member of staff. When raised through appropriate channels, there has been limited transparency regarding the outcome or any disciplinary response.
This situation underscores the need for stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure:
- Student wellbeing, dignity and safety are prioritised
- Complaints are investigated thoroughly and impartially
- Outcomes and actions are communicated appropriately to affected parties
- Staff are held accountable where policy breaches occur
Strengthening these processes is essential to maintaining trust in the system and ensuring all students, regardless of location are protected and treated fairly.
