Peter Armstrong – Charleville Branch Life Member, 1994
Peter Armstrong’s involvement with ICPA began in the organisation’s early years in the Charleville district. Together with his wife Shirley, Peter became involved at the first opportunity, beginning a long association with ICPA and its work to improve educational opportunities for isolated children and their families.
After attending the first ICPA meeting in Charleville, Peter joined Mac Patterson in travelling throughout south-west Queensland, visiting families and helping to establish the Augathella and Quilpie Branches. His willingness to travel considerable distances and encourage others to become involved helped strengthen ICPA’s presence across the region.
Peter was also a founding member of the Langlo Crossing Branch, serving for several years as its Secretary and later President. When the Langlo Crossing Branch amalgamated with the Charleville Branch in 1977, Peter continued his involvement with ICPA through the Charleville Branch.
In 1975, while President of Langlo Crossing, Peter was one of many ICPA members throughout the district who worked long hours preparing for the State Conference held in Charleville. His contribution reflected his willingness to support ICPA not only through formal leadership roles but also through the practical work required to keep the organisation active and successful.
Throughout his many years of involvement, Peter also provided unwavering support to Shirley in her extensive Branch and State ICPA roles. Together, their commitment to ICPA became an important part of their family life and their contribution to rural and remote education.
In recognition of his longstanding service, his role in establishing and leading Branches, and his dedication to the work of ICPA, Peter Armstrong was awarded Life Membership of the Charleville Branch in 1994, alongside Shirley. His Life Membership acknowledged many years of service to ICPA and to the geographically isolated families of south-west Queensland.
