Norma Norris – Boulia, Bedourie and Birdsville Branch Life Member, 1983

Norma Norris was a dedicated and highly respected member of the Boulia, Bedourie and Birdsville Branch of ICPA, playing an important role in the organisation's early development and advocating for improved educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her determination, generosity and willingness to travel considerable distances to support rural families made her a valued member of the Branch.

Norma and her husband Lou were among those who attended the first ICPA meeting held in Boulia on 21 April 1972. Although Norma did not become actively involved until 1975, she quickly developed a strong commitment to the organisation and its work supporting isolated families.

In 1976, Norma was elected Branch Vice President, a position she held for two consecutive years. Her dedication and leadership were further recognised when she became Branch President in 1978 and 1979, providing guidance and support during the formative years of the Branch.

Norma's commitment extended beyond her local community, with her election as a Branch delegate to the ICPA Queensland State Conference in Longreach and the Federal Conference in Perth in 1977. She also travelled to Mount Isa in 1982 as an observer, maintaining her interest in the wider organisation and its advocacy for rural education.

While Norma held several important executive positions, it was her extraordinary willingness to personally visit isolated families that made her contribution particularly significant. She regularly travelled considerable distances, often alone in her own vehicle, to meet with families throughout the district, listen to their concerns and discuss the challenges associated with isolation and educating children in remote areas.

Having experienced limitations in her own educational opportunities, Norma was particularly determined to ensure that other children had access to a better education. She understood the difficulties faced by geographically isolated families and worked tirelessly to help improve educational access and support.

Norma's generosity extended to the financial wellbeing of the Branch. Despite the considerable distances she travelled on ICPA business, she never sought reimbursement for her expenses. By personally covering her travel costs, Norma helped the Branch strengthen its financial position during its early years, ensuring funds could be directed towards supporting the organisation's activities and advocacy.

Her dedication reflected a genuine belief in the importance of ICPA and its role in bringing isolated families together. Norma recognised that improving educational opportunities required more than attending meetings; it meant personally connecting with families, understanding their circumstances and ensuring their concerns were represented.

When Norma and Lou later relocated to Townsville with their daughter Janelle, her departure was keenly felt by fellow members. However, her commitment to ICPA continued, and she remained a member of the Boulia, Bedourie and Birdsville Branch. Her attendance at the 1982 Mount Isa conference as an observer, at her own expense, further demonstrated her ongoing interest and dedication.

Throughout her involvement, Norma was remembered for her kindness, determination, generosity and willingness to help others. Her practical approach to advocacy and genuine concern for isolated families helped strengthen the Branch and contributed to its early success.

In recognition of her pioneering involvement in the Branch, two years as Vice President, two years as President, representation at State and Federal Conferences, extensive personal outreach to isolated families and extraordinary generosity in meeting her own travel expenses, Norma Norris was nominated for Life Membership of the Boulia, Bedourie and Birdsville Branch.

Her nomination acknowledged her outstanding contribution to ICPA and her determination to ensure children living in geographically isolated areas had access to improved educational opportunities. Norma's dedication, compassion and commitment to supporting rural families left a lasting impression on the Branch and the members she so generously served.
