Megan McNicholl – Western Downs Branch Life Member, 2002
Megan McNicholl made an outstanding contribution to ICPA at Branch, State and Federal levels, demonstrating exceptional leadership, dedication and a longstanding commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her extensive involvement in educational advocacy, policy development and organisational leadership made her a highly respected and influential member of ICPA throughout Queensland and Australia.
Megan was a dedicated member of the Western Downs Branch, where she provided valuable leadership and encouragement to fellow members. She served as Branch Vice President from 1990 to 1991, before being elected Branch President in 1992, a position she held until 1994. Throughout her involvement, Megan remained strongly connected to her local Branch, regularly attending meetings and encouraging other families to become involved in ICPA.
Megan's commitment to grassroots advocacy was particularly valued by fellow members. Despite the considerable demands of her State and Federal responsibilities, she continued to make time for Branch activities, sharing her extensive knowledge and experience to support members with educational concerns. Her willingness to remain actively involved at a local level reflected her belief in the importance of maintaining strong connections between ICPA's leadership and the families it represented.
Her contribution extended to ICPA Queensland State Council, where she served for many years in several important leadership positions, including State Publicity Officer and Vice President. Through these roles, Megan helped strengthen ICPA's public profile and represented the organisation on numerous committees and reference groups, ensuring the concerns of geographically isolated families were considered in educational discussions and decision-making.
Megan was actively involved in preparing submissions and policy recommendations, generously contributing her time and expertise to ICPA's advocacy. Her work encompassed several important educational areas, including Small Schools, Boarding Schools, the Priority Country Area Program (PCAP) and Teacher Education. Her broad knowledge and understanding of the challenges faced by rural families enabled her to contribute effectively across these portfolios.
One of Megan's significant achievements was spearheading the establishment of the Early Childhood portfolio within ICPA Queensland. Recognising the importance of early learning opportunities for children living in geographically isolated areas, she helped ensure early childhood education became a dedicated area of advocacy within the organisation. Her leadership contributed to broadening ICPA's focus and strengthening its representation of rural families with younger children.
Megan's dedication and leadership were further recognised through her involvement at the national level. By 2002, she was serving as ICPA Federal President, representing geographically isolated families throughout Australia. Her election to this position reflected the considerable respect she had earned through her years of service and her commitment to improving educational access and opportunities.
Throughout her involvement, Megan was recognised for her enthusiasm, motivation and willingness to undertake significant responsibilities. Her contribution to ICPA extended well beyond formal leadership positions, with countless hours devoted to meetings, submissions, advocacy and supporting fellow members.
Importantly, Megan remained committed to the Western Downs Branch despite her demanding State and Federal responsibilities. Her fellow members particularly appreciated her efforts to attend local meetings, encourage new members and provide advice on individual educational matters. Her extensive knowledge and willingness to assist made her an invaluable source of support to families throughout the district.
Megan's service demonstrated the importance of strong leadership combined with a genuine connection to grassroots members. Her contribution helped strengthen ICPA's advocacy, develop new areas of educational representation and ensure the needs of isolated families remained a priority at every level of the organisation.
In recognition of her outstanding Branch leadership, extensive service on ICPA Queensland State Council, contribution to educational policy and submissions, establishment of the Early Childhood portfolio and leadership as ICPA Federal President, Megan McNicholl was awarded Life Membership of the Western Downs Branch on 30 October 2002.
