Leigh Pedersen – Cairns Radio Branch Life Member, 2002
Leigh Pedersen was a dedicated and highly respected member of the Cairns Radio Branch of ICPA, contributing more than a decade of leadership, advocacy and commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her extensive knowledge of Distance Education, combined with her firsthand experience educating her own children, made her a valuable advocate for families throughout Far North Queensland.
Leigh's passion for rural education developed through her experiences as a Home Tutor to her two sons, whom she educated through Distance Education until Year 10. Both boys achieved excellent academic results under her guidance. These experiences provided Leigh with a thorough understanding of the challenges associated with correspondence and on-air lessons, particularly as students progressed into higher year levels. Her practical knowledge enabled her to identify areas requiring improvement and advocate for changes that would better support isolated students and their families.
Through her involvement with the Cairns School of Distance Education P&C Association, Leigh gained further insight into the educational challenges faced by families throughout the region. She developed a strong understanding of the unique circumstances affecting students in Far North Queensland and became a determined advocate for ensuring their concerns were heard and addressed.
At Branch level, Leigh demonstrated outstanding leadership, serving as President of the Cairns Radio Branch for three years and Vice President for a further three years. Her commitment extended well beyond these formal positions, with Leigh actively contributing to Branch discussions, supporting members and helping guide the organisation's advocacy priorities.
Leigh also represented the Cairns Radio Branch as a delegate at numerous ICPA Queensland State and Federal Conferences, ensuring the educational needs of families in her district were brought to the attention of the wider organisation. Her extensive knowledge of Distance Education and willingness to contribute to discussions made her a highly valued representative.
Her advocacy extended to the Northern Region Priority Country Area Program (PCAP) Committee, where she served as an ICPA representative for six years. Through this role, Leigh contributed to discussions and initiatives aimed at improving educational resources, services and opportunities for children attending rural and remote schools.
Leigh also represented ICPA at the Student Performance Standards Workshop, contributing her knowledge and experience to discussions concerning educational standards and student outcomes. Her involvement reflected her commitment to ensuring geographically isolated children received an education that was both appropriate to their circumstances and comparable in quality to that available to other students.
Throughout her years of service, Leigh generously contributed countless hours to preparing information and reports requested by ICPA Queensland State Council. Her thorough research, practical insights and willingness to assist were greatly appreciated by State Councillors and helped inform the organisation's advocacy on important educational issues.
Beyond her formal responsibilities, Leigh was recognised for her mentorship and encouragement of fellow members. Although she had stepped back from active leadership roles to allow younger members to become more involved, she continued to provide guidance, advice and support to new members and Branch office bearers. Her willingness to share her experience helped ensure the continued strength and effectiveness of the Cairns Radio Branch.
Throughout her involvement, Leigh demonstrated a genuine commitment to ICPA and the importance of ensuring that children living in geographically isolated areas had access to quality educational opportunities. Her dedication extended beyond her own family's needs, reflecting a strong belief in supporting future generations of rural and remote students.
In recognition of her more than a decade of dedicated membership, six years in Branch leadership positions, extensive State and Federal Conference representation, six years on the Northern Region PCAP Committee, contribution to educational standards and tireless advocacy for Distance Education families, Leigh Pedersen was recognised with Life Membership of the Cairns Radio Branch in 2002. Her Life Membership acknowledged an outstanding contribution to ICPA and her longstanding commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children and their families.
