Denise Hartwig – North Burnett Branch Life Member, 2020

Denise Hartwig has been a dedicated and passionate member of the North Burnett Branch of ICPA, formerly the Eidsvold–Cracow Branch, for more than 24 years. Throughout this time, Denise has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children and supporting rural families, particularly during periods when the Branch faced significant challenges.

Denise provided outstanding leadership as Branch President from 1994 to 2015, a period of approximately 20 years. Her dedication and determination were instrumental in keeping the Branch active during times of declining membership, when the possibility of closure was a genuine concern. Together with her late husband Robert, Denise worked tirelessly to maintain the Branch's strength, ensuring that rural families continued to have a voice through ICPA.

Denise's passion for Distance Education came from firsthand experience. She home tutored her two daughters, Tania and Nicole, through Capricornia School of Distance Education, before they transitioned to Monto State High School for their later secondary years. Initially boarding with their aunt, the girls later travelled a 100-kilometre round trip by car and bus to attend high school. These experiences gave Denise a deep understanding of the challenges and sacrifices faced by isolated families in accessing education.

A trained teacher, Denise balanced her responsibilities as a home tutor with her extensive ICPA commitments. After her daughters transitioned to mainstream schooling, she returned to teaching locally, continuing her dedication to education within the wider community.

One of Denise's significant contributions came in 2005, when she actively opposed the proposed closure of the Capricornia School of Distance Education Rockhampton Campus. As both an executive member of the Eidsvold–Cracow Branch and Secretary of the school's P&C Association, Denise played an important role in advocating for the retention of essential Distance Education services for rural and remote families.

Denise also represented her Branch at ICPA Queensland State Conferences, including Yeppoon in 1997 and Longreach in 1998, contributing to the wider organisation's advocacy and strengthening connections with other isolated families.

Beyond her leadership and advocacy, Denise was instrumental in organising and supporting numerous Branch fundraising activities. Together with Robert and fellow members, she contributed countless hours to catering at local campdrafts, organising fun days on properties, managing gates at community events and conducting raffles. These efforts helped establish a sound financial position for the Branch, providing ongoing stability and ensuring its ability to support future generations of rural families.

Denise's commitment to ICPA was perhaps best captured in her 1998 President's Report, when she reflected on the importance of unity and support among isolated families: “Our branch, whilst small, optimises to me what ICPA is all about, unity and support. For that I have you members to thank. We are all but a phone call away.”

These words reflected Denise's belief in the importance of connection, friendship and collective advocacy, particularly for families living and educating their children in isolated communities.

In recognition of her more than two decades of dedicated service, approximately 20 years as Branch President, significant advocacy for Distance Education, tireless fundraising and determination to ensure the continued strength of the Branch, Denise Hartwig was nominated for Life Membership of the North Burnett Branch. Her Life Membership nomination acknowledged an exceptional contribution to ICPA and the lasting impact of her leadership, commitment and generosity on rural families throughout the North Burnett district.
