Christine Stanford – Charleville Branch of the Air Life Member, 2013

Christine Stanford was a dedicated member of the Charleville ICPA Branch of the Air for 21 years, during which she became a passionate and determined advocate for rural and remote education. She served the Branch in a number of roles, including President and Publicity Officer, and was frequently responsible for investigating and researching motions for conference. Whatever role Chris undertook, she approached it thoroughly and with great pride.

Chris was known for her persistence and willingness to follow an issue through until an answer was found. Her Branch recalled one of her favourite sayings: “Leave it with me, I will follow it up”—and invariably, she did. Whether dealing with government officials or pursuing issues affecting isolated families, Chris was determined to achieve the best possible outcome.

From 2004 to 2011, Chris served on ICPA Queensland State Council, contributing across the Post Compulsory and Distance Education portfolios and serving as VISE Coordinator and Risk Management Officer. In the Risk Management role, she helped modify forms to make them more user-friendly and ensured Branches completed the necessary requirements.

Her contribution to the Distance Education portfolio was particularly valuable during a period of significant change, as educational materials increasingly moved to electronic delivery. Chris participated in numerous meetings with Education Queensland, advocating for the needs of Distance Education families throughout this transition.

Chris also represented ICPA at a wide range of meetings and community forums, including the Rural Women’s Symposium in Roma, ETRF reforms and MCEEYTA briefings. She supported communities facing important educational issues, including explaining the bypassing scheme at Injune State School and assisting the Bymount School community during discussions surrounding the proposed closure of their small school.

Her wider community involvement was equally extensive. Chris served as a SODEA representative for Charleville SDE, President of the Charleville SDE P&C, and was involved with the local REAP committee, St John’s P&C and the Roma Community Education Foundation.

In recognition of her 21 years of devoted Branch service, seven years on ICPA Queensland State Council and tireless advocacy for rural and remote education, Christine Stanford was nominated for Life Membership of the Charleville Branch of the Air in 2012. Described by her Branch as “truly an inspiration to many Rural and Remote Women,” Chris’s contribution reflected her determination to make a genuine difference for isolated children, families and communities.
