Anne Chater – Dawson Valley Branch Life Member, 2021
Anne Chater’s commitment to rural education and community service spans decades. Anne and her husband Bruce moved to Theodore around 40 years prior to her Life Membership nomination, when Bruce began work as the rural GP for the community. Both became passionate advocates for quality rural health and education services, with Anne developing a particular interest in supporting children and families requiring special educational assistance, which can be difficult to access in rural and remote areas.
A teacher by profession, Anne initially taught at Theodore State School before taking time away from teaching to raise their four sons. She later returned as a specialist teacher, supporting children experiencing difficulties with reading and numeracy. Alongside her teaching, family responsibilities and involvement in the family medical practice, Anne contributed to numerous community organisations, including many years of service to ICPA.
Anne served as Secretary of the Dawson Valley Branch from 2001 to 2012, providing more than a decade of dedicated service to the Branch. She also travelled extensively to represent Dawson Valley at ICPA conferences, often alongside fellow member Liz Shoecraft. Their conference journeys took them to locations including Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Longreach and Cloncurry, providing opportunities to advocate directly for the needs of their local families.
One memorable example of Anne’s advocacy came when the Branch raised concerns that some Theodore children would miss out on Pre-school because there were too many students for one class. Despite being nervous about presenting their first motion, Anne presented it to conference, where it was successfully carried—an important early advocacy achievement for the Dawson Valley representatives.
Anne and Bruce’s commitment to their community was tested during the devastating 2010–11 Theodore floods, when the town was inundated and residents evacuated. They lost their entire medical practice, along with years of medical and ICPA records. Despite this enormous setback, they remained committed to improving rural health and education services, advocating for locally trained skilled staff, improved in-community training, early intervention and stronger services for regional communities.
Anne’s contribution to rural communities extended well beyond ICPA. She received an OAM in 2020 for contributions to rural communities and rural medicine.
In recognition of her more than a decade as Branch Secretary, extensive conference representation and many years of tireless advocacy for rural education and community wellbeing, Anne Chater was nominated for Life Membership of the Dawson Valley Branch in 2021. Her Life Membership recognised a longstanding commitment to ensuring rural children, families and communities had access to the educational opportunities and essential services they deserved.
