Ann Sanderson – Tambo Branch Life Member, 1992

Ann Sanderson was a dedicated and highly valued member of the Tambo Branch of ICPA, contributing many years of leadership, advocacy and commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her involvement began in the late 1970s, when she and her husband Peter moved to the Tambo district with their three sons. With education becoming a priority for the family, ICPA soon became an important part of their lives.

Ann quickly became an active member of the Tambo Branch, taking on various executive responsibilities, including Secretary/Treasurer and later Branch President in 1987–1988. Her willingness to contribute her time and organisational skills helped strengthen the Branch and ensure the educational needs of isolated families remained a priority.

Ann's commitment to ICPA extended beyond her local Branch. After attending the ICPA Queensland State Conference in Charters Towers and the Federal Conference in Broken Hill, she was elected to the ICPA Queensland State Executive in 1981. This marked the beginning of several years of involvement in State-level advocacy, where she contributed to initiatives supporting rural and remote families.

In December 1982, the arrival of Ann and Peter's fourth son, Craig, brought additional family responsibilities. Recognising the demands of raising a young family, Ann stepped away from her previous portfolio responsibilities and took on the Lone Members portfolio, which could be managed from home.

This role became a family effort, with Ann writing and collating information while her sons helped fold, stamp and address letters. Their involvement reflected the considerable personal commitment required of ICPA volunteers and the important role families played in supporting the organisation's work.

In 1983, Ann promoted the ICPA Queensland Art Union, contributing to fundraising efforts that supported the organisation's activities and advocacy. She also held a particular interest in the Gifted and Talented Children portfolio, recognising the importance of ensuring isolated students with additional educational needs and abilities had access to appropriate learning opportunities.

Ann continued serving on ICPA Queensland State Council until 1986, when she resigned at the Mackay State Conference due to family commitments. Her years on State Council demonstrated her dedication to representing isolated families while balancing the responsibilities of raising four children in a rural community.

Although Ann stepped away from State Council, her involvement with ICPA continued through the Tambo Branch. She remained connected to Branch meetings and activities, maintaining her interest in the educational needs of local families. At the time of her Life Membership recognition, her youngest son Craig was still attending school, ensuring education remained an important part of the Sanderson family's life.

Throughout her involvement, Ann demonstrated the importance of dedicated volunteers who contribute at both Branch and State levels. Her willingness to take on leadership positions, support fundraising initiatives and adapt her responsibilities around family commitments reflected a genuine commitment to ICPA and the families it represented.

In recognition of her longstanding service to the Tambo Branch, leadership as Secretary/Treasurer and President, five years on ICPA Queensland State Council, contribution to the Lone Members and Gifted and Talented Children portfolios, and continued dedication to rural education, Ann Sanderson was awarded Life Membership of the Tambo Branch in November 1992. Her Life Membership acknowledged her valuable contribution to ICPA and her commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children and their families.
