Anita Lethbridge – Taroom/Wandoan Branch Life Member, 1998
Anita Lethbridge was a dedicated and highly respected member of the Taroom/Wandoan Branch of ICPA, contributing a decade of leadership, advocacy and commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her extensive involvement at both Branch and State levels, combined with her knowledge of educational allowances and boarding school assistance, made her a valuable advocate for rural and remote families.
Anita became an active member of the Taroom/Wandoan Branch in 1988, quickly demonstrating her willingness to contribute to the organisation and support families throughout the district. Her commitment to ICPA was reflected in the numerous leadership positions she held over the following years, helping strengthen the Branch and ensure the educational needs of isolated children remained a priority.
In 1990, Anita was elected Branch Secretary, a position she held until December 1994. During these four years, she provided valuable administrative support, helping coordinate Branch activities, maintain communication with members and ensure the smooth operation of the organisation.
Anita's dedication and leadership were further recognised when she became Branch President in December 1994, serving until December 1997. Throughout her presidency, she continued to advocate for rural families and encouraged greater awareness of ICPA's role in improving educational access and opportunities. Following her presidency, Anita took on the role of Branch Vice President in December 1997, continuing her support and guidance to fellow members.
Her contribution extended beyond the local Branch when she joined ICPA Queensland State Council in 1993, serving until 1998. During her five years on State Council, Anita held several important responsibilities, including serving as Lone Members Officer and leading the Small Remote High Schools and Boarding Schools portfolios.
Through these roles, Anita developed considerable knowledge of the challenges faced by students who needed to leave home to access secondary and tertiary education. She became particularly knowledgeable about the financial allowances and assistance available to students attending boarding schools, hostels and universities, recognising the importance of ensuring families understood and could access the support to which they were entitled.
One of Anita's most valuable contributions was her willingness to travel extensively throughout the Taroom/Wandoan district, visiting local schools to promote ICPA and raise awareness of its advocacy and achievements. She generously devoted many hours to speaking with families, educators and community members about the importance of ICPA and the benefits it had brought to the education of geographically isolated children.
Her outreach helped strengthen connections between the Branch and local schools, while encouraging greater understanding of the educational challenges faced by rural families. Anita recognised that effective advocacy required both representing members' concerns and ensuring families were informed about the assistance and opportunities available to them.
Throughout her involvement, Anita was recognised for her knowledge, commitment and willingness to support fellow members. Her experience in educational allowances and boarding school matters made her a valuable source of information for families navigating the financial and practical challenges associated with educating children away from home.
Anita's service at both Branch and State levels demonstrated her strong belief in the importance of ICPA and the need for rural families to have a collective voice in educational decision-making. Her dedication helped strengthen the Taroom/Wandoan Branch and contributed to ICPA Queensland's wider advocacy for geographically isolated students.
In recognition of her 10 years of dedicated membership, service as Branch Secretary, President and Vice President, five years on ICPA Queensland State Council, leadership of the Lone Members, Small Remote High Schools and Boarding Schools portfolios, and extensive outreach to schools throughout the district, Anita Lethbridge was awarded Life Membership of the Taroom/Wandoan Branch on 23 May 1998. The honour acknowledged Anita's outstanding contribution to ICPA and her commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children and their families.
