Yvonne McCoy – Mt Isa Branch of the Air Life Member, 1985
Yvonne McCoy was a foundation member of the Mt Isa ICPA Branch of the Air, playing an important role in establishing the Branch and advocating for improved educational opportunities for isolated children throughout Northwest Queensland. At the Branch's inaugural meeting on 22 May 1978, Yvonne was appointed Interim President, helping guide the newly formed organisation through its earliest stages.
From the outset, Yvonne became actively involved in ICPA at both Branch and State levels. She attended the 1978 State Conference in Emerald and the 1979 State Conference in Charters Towers, where she was elected to the ICPA Queensland State Executive. In 1980, she attended the State Conference in Charleville and was elected Branch Secretary/Treasurer, taking on significant administrative responsibilities while continuing her advocacy for School of the Air families.
As Branch Secretary, Yvonne was instrumental in securing improvements to the Mt Isa School of the Air. She was heavily involved in preparing and coordinating the Branch's correspondence requesting a new School of the Air building and an additional radio frequency. These long-awaited improvements became a reality in 1983, representing an important achievement for isolated students and their families.
Yvonne also contributed significantly to advocacy surrounding the Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) Scheme. During interviews associated with the Tannock Report, she coordinated meetings and schedules between families across Northwest Queensland and the researchers undertaking the review, ensuring the experiences and concerns of geographically isolated families were heard.
In 1981, Yvonne attended the Federal Conference in Bourke as a member of the Queensland State Executive and the State Conference in Rockhampton. Following these conferences, she stepped down from her State Executive position to concentrate on her growing Branch responsibilities.
Yvonne's organisational skills were particularly evident when Mt Isa hosted the 1982 ICPA Queensland State Conference, the first State Conference held in Northwest Queensland. Having relinquished the Secretary's position at the preceding Annual General Meeting, she remained Branch Treasurer and took on the demanding role of Conference Convenor. Her leadership and considerable efforts contributed to the success of this significant event.
Beyond her formal roles, Yvonne served as the ICPA representative on the Queensland Isolated Students' Education Committee (QINSEC), regularly attending meetings at the Education Centre in Mt Isa. She was also a dedicated fundraiser and actively encouraged new families to become involved in ICPA, recognising the importance of maintaining a strong and representative Branch.
Importantly, Yvonne continued supporting ICPA even as her own family's schooling years were nearing completion, demonstrating a commitment to the educational needs of future generations of isolated children.
In recognition of her foundation membership, leadership as Interim President, service as Branch Secretary and Treasurer, contribution to the Queensland State Executive, conference organisation and tireless advocacy for School of the Air families, Yvonne McCoy was recognised with Life Membership of the Mt Isa Branch of the Air, believed to have been presented in 1985. Her Life Membership acknowledged her outstanding contribution to strengthening ICPA and improving educational opportunities for children throughout Northwest Queensland.
