Leonie O’Shannessy – Thargomindah Branch Life Member, 1986
Leonie O’Shannessy was a dedicated and highly valued member of the Thargomindah Branch of ICPA, contributing many years of leadership, commitment and support to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her longstanding involvement, particularly through her extensive service as Branch Secretary, made her an important contributor to the strength and continued operation of the Branch.
Leonie's association with ICPA began in 1971 while living in the Bourke district, during the early years of the organisation's establishment. Her involvement reflected an understanding of the challenges faced by families educating children in isolated areas and the importance of having a collective voice to advocate for improved educational opportunities.
Leonie's dedication and organisational abilities were recognised in 1978 when she was nominated for the position of Branch Secretary. She accepted the responsibility and continued serving in this important role for the following eight years, providing valuable administrative support and continuity to the Branch.
Throughout her time as Secretary, Leonie demonstrated a strong commitment to the organisation and its members. Her willingness to undertake the ongoing responsibilities associated with Branch administration helped maintain its activities and ensured members remained connected to ICPA's wider advocacy for rural and remote education.
Beyond her formal executive responsibilities, Leonie was recognised as an active and interested member who enthusiastically supported all Branch activities. Her commitment reflected a genuine belief in the importance of ICPA and its role in representing the educational needs of isolated families.
Leonie's contribution also extended beyond her local Branch through her attendance at numerous ICPA Queensland State and Federal Conferences, where she represented Thargomindah as a delegate and observer. Her participation demonstrated her interest in the wider organisation and her commitment to ensuring the concerns of families in the Thargomindah district were represented at State and national levels.
Throughout her years of involvement, Leonie provided valuable experience and continuity to the Branch. Her dedication to the Secretary's role, willingness to participate in conferences and continued support of Branch activities made her a highly respected member of the organisation.
In recognition of her 15 years of involvement with ICPA, longstanding membership of the Thargomindah Branch, eight years of dedicated service as Branch Secretary and representation at numerous State and Federal Conferences, Leonie O’Shannessy was awarded Life Membership of the Thargomindah Branch on 12 April 1986.
