Florence Mitchell – Roma Branch Life Member, 1988
Florence Mitchell was a foundation member of the Roma Branch of ICPA, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to improving educational opportunities for rural and geographically isolated children. From the Branch's earliest years, Florence became a dedicated and highly valued member, contributing her time, leadership and enthusiasm to strengthening the organisation and supporting families throughout the Roma district.
Throughout her involvement, Florence held numerous executive and committee positions, reflecting her willingness to take on responsibility wherever needed. She served as a Committee Member from 1978 to 1979, before becoming Branch Vice President from 1979 to 1980. She continued her service as a Committee Member from 1980 to 1982, followed by Branch Secretary from 1982 to 1984.
In 1985, Florence was elected President of the Roma Branch, a position she held until 1986. Her years of executive service provided valuable leadership and continuity, helping ensure the Branch remained an active voice for the educational needs of rural and remote families.
Florence's contribution also extended beyond the Branch through her role as a Local Area Council representative for the Priority Country Area Program (PCAP). Through this involvement, she contributed to discussions and initiatives aimed at improving educational opportunities and support for children living in rural communities.
While Florence held many formal positions, much of her contribution occurred quietly behind the scenes. She was a tireless supporter of Branch catering, fundraising and community activities, willingly giving her time and energy despite the demands of her other community commitments. Her practical assistance and reliability were highly valued by fellow members and played an important role in the Branch's ongoing activities.
Importantly, Florence's commitment to ICPA continued long after her own children had completed their schooling. She remained actively involved because of her genuine concern for the quality and accessibility of education for all children, rather than simply the needs of her own family.
Throughout her years in office, Florence made every effort to attend meetings concerning education within the district. Her dedication reflected a strong belief that children living in rural and remote areas deserved access to quality educational opportunities, regardless of their geographical location.
Florence was particularly respected for her willingness to contribute wherever needed. Her fellow members acknowledged that much of her work would never appear in official meeting minutes, yet her efforts were essential to the continued strength and success of the Roma Branch.
In recognition of her foundation membership, extensive Branch executive service, leadership as President, involvement with PCAP and tireless contribution to fundraising and community activities, Florence Mitchell was awarded Life Membership of the Roma Branch on 10 October 1988. Her Life Membership acknowledged an outstanding commitment to ICPA and her dedication to ensuring rural and remote children had access to equitable educational opportunities
