Dorinda Schwennesen – Roma Branch Life Member, 1997

Dorinda Schwennesen was a dedicated and highly valued member of the Roma Branch of ICPA, contributing many years of leadership, organisation and commitment to improving educational opportunities for geographically isolated children. Her involvement with ICPA began as a Lone Member, following a visit by Bunny Pownall, who had been invited to speak to a group of correspondence teachers. Recognising Dorinda's strong interest in ICPA's goals, Bunny encouraged her involvement, beginning a longstanding association with the organisation.

In 1980, Dorinda joined the Roma Branch, quickly becoming an active and enthusiastic member. Over the following 17 years, she held numerous executive positions, generously contributing her time and organisational skills to supporting the Branch and the rural families it represented.

Dorinda served as Branch Secretary from 1988 to 1991, providing valuable administrative support and helping ensure the smooth operation of Branch activities. She subsequently became Branch Vice President from 1991 to 1996, demonstrating her continued willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and contribute to the Branch's development.

Her involvement also extended to ICPA Queensland State Council, where she served on the State Executive Committee in 1991, as Assistant Secretary in 1992, and as Vice President in 1993 and 1994. Through these roles, Dorinda contributed to the wider organisation's advocacy and helped ensure the educational concerns of rural and remote families were represented at State level.

Throughout her years of involvement, Dorinda represented the Roma Branch at numerous ICPA Queensland State and Federal Conferences, sharing her knowledge and experience while strengthening connections between the Branch and the broader organisation. Her willingness to provide information, advice and assistance made her a valuable source of support for fellow members.

One of Dorinda's most significant contributions came in 1997, when she undertook the demanding role of Convenor of the ICPA Federal Conference held in Roma. Organising such a major event required considerable planning, coordination and dedication, and Dorinda approached the responsibility with her characteristic enthusiasm and professionalism.

Her exceptional organisational skills, good humour and ability to bring people together were particularly recognised during the conference preparations. She worked tirelessly to ensure members and volunteers were involved and supported, helping deliver an important event for both the Roma Branch and the wider ICPA organisation.

Beyond her formal positions, Dorinda was remembered as a hardworking, knowledgeable and generous member, always willing to contribute wherever needed. Her commitment reflected a genuine belief in the importance of ICPA and its role in supporting isolated families and advocating for equitable educational opportunities.

In recognition of her 17 years of dedicated Branch membership, extensive executive service, leadership on ICPA Queensland State Council, conference representation and outstanding contribution as Convenor of the 1997 Federal Conference, Dorinda Schwennesen was awarded Life Membership of the Roma Branch in July 1997. The honour acknowledged her exceptional contribution to ICPA and the lasting impact of her leadership, dedication and service to rural and remote families.
