Having lived in Theodore, Central Queensland, for the past 43 years, Anne has been deeply involved in the community. She owned and managed Theodore Medical alongside her husband, Dr. Bruce Chater, as well as being the Support Teacher for Literacy and Numeracy at Theodore State School. Recently, Anne retired from Education Queensland after 45 years of service.
Anne and Bruce are well-known in the rural health sector. Anne has served as both the National and State Chair of the Rural Medical Family Network. Together, they have travelled extensively to rural and remote areas, both nationally and internationally, and are well aware of the disparities in health and education services in these regions.
The couple has four sons, all of whom completed their primary education in Theodore before attending boarding school and university in Brisbane. During these years, the Isolated Children's Parents' Association (ICPA) provided invaluable support to their family. Anne is a life member of the Dawson Valley Branch and still proudly claims that the ICPA is one of the best lobby groups she has had the privilege of being associated with.
In addition to her professional roles, Anne has contributed significantly to various community groups. She has served as Chief Ring Steward of the Theodore Show, Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Theodore and Treasurer of the Theodore Chamber of Commerce. Her community involvement began with organisations including Nursing Mothers, Playgroup and the School Committee.
Anne is a strong proponent for ensuring rural and remote communities are ‘in reach’ to services, rather than always relying on ‘outreach’. She strongly believes that rural communities should take the lead in securing their future by developing local solutions to local problems. With her unique perspective on the intersection of education and health, Anne understands how these sectors can support one another.
Recently, Anne and Bruce relocated to Maleny, a still somewhat rural area where Anne enjoys the sight of Maleny Dairy cows grazing just across the road.
