The announcement by Telstra and Optus on 14 August 2024 to extend the 3G network closure allows extra time to execute one last push for broad public awareness of the impending closure.

What does this mean for me?

Once the network is switched off, old devices that rely on 3G will not work anymore or may provide limited coverage and will need to be upgraded. This includes:

3G-only mobile phones

4G-enabled mobiles that rely on 3G for emergency calls

4G-enabled mobiles that aren’t configured to work on Telstra’s 4G network

Other devices that rely on 3G, like medical devices and some older EFTPOS terminals

If your device doesn’t support VoLTE emergency calling, you will not be able to make an emergency call to 000 on the Telstra Mobile Network.

  • If you have a device that can only use 3G, you won’t be able to connect to Telstra's network after 28 October 2024.
  • If your mobile device doesn't have Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, even if it uses 4G data, it will not be able to make voice calls on our network after 28 October 2024.
  • Not all VoLTE enabled devices support emergency VoLTE calling, meaning they will not be able to make an emergency call to 000 once 3G closes.
