Over 160 delegates, observers and guests traversed the country to attend the 2022 Federal Conference in beautiful Perth, nestled on the shores of the Swan River. The Ritz-Carlton as the venue for the 2-day conference was splendid indeed.
Federal President Alana Moller commenced the conference right on time and with a warm welcome to all – despite the frosty weather outside. Her report was inspiring and informative, as were the reports from other State Council Presidents. The federal portfolio reports detailed activities undertaken in advocating for the needs of members as requested in their motions and progress made thus far. All portfolio activities can be found here.
The guest speakers came with diverse stories and information from various backgrounds. There was something relatable to each attendee depending on where they are in the education cycle of their children. For early childhood education, we heard from David Ansell, Minderoo Foundation, about the Thrive by Five Program, Hannah Calcino spoke about transitioning from Distance Education to Boarding School, and Phil Brown told us about the Country Education Partnership for High School students.
The opening speaker, Regional Education Commissioner, the Hon Fiona Nash, was most encouraging and expressed a clear understanding of the challenges our families face educating their children in rural and remote Australia. On the first morning, we also heard Senator the Hon Anthony Chisholm, Assistant Minister for Education’s, message of support.
Dr Craig Challen’s retelling of his involvement in rescuing 12 boys and their football coach from flooded caves in Thailand was truly inspiring, heart-warming and motivational. Attendees were also well informed by representatives from Telstra’s Justine Rowe, nbn (Gavin Williams) and ABSA (Richard Stokes).
Debate on the Conference floor for the 73 motions was spirited and showed the fervour that our members feel about their respective and collective situations. Having government and organisational personnel in the room to witness these and hear first-hand the real-life stories of our members can only help improve these conditions.
A Federal Council of twelve, including the immediate past president, were re-elected to Council, albeit some in different roles due to the retirement of several councillors. Three spaces remain vacant on Council, so if you have been thinking about nominating or would like to know more about Federal Council, please contact Federal President Alana Moller.
The Convening Committee’s organisation and management of the Conference, including the pre and post-conference events, conference dinner and partner tours, were absolutely superb, ensuring everything ran smoothly and impeccably. Likewise, Madam President Alana Moller, with her military- like time control, ensured not only did things run on time but she even had the days finished ahead of time, which was much appreciated by attendees as it allowed for a little more networking and socialisation.
Next year’s Federal Conference will be held in Darwin on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 July 2023, so Save the Date to your diaries and calendars now.
