Today, ICPA (Aust) is once again urging Australians to observe Geographically Isolated Distance Education Day in recognition of the significant role geographically isolated families play in the compulsory education of their children right across remote areas of the country.
Over 1000 families are obliged to facilitate daily face to face schooling in the family home because there is no accessible local school for them to attend. This has been the case for generations. It is imperative that this mode of school delivery, which is far removed from mainstream educational circumstances, is more widely recognised and valued by government. ICPA (Aust) is calling for remuneration for geographically isolated families who must provide, with no financial assistance, a full-time adult Home Tutor in the home schoolroom, whether this be the mother or another family member or an employed governess or tutor. The time is now to invest in the educational success and wellbeing of rural and remote children and their families right across rural and remote Australia.
