Meekatharra Air

Welcome to the Meekatharra Air page.

Meekatharra Air Branch was the first ICPA branch to be formed in Western Australia. The inaugural meeting, convened by Mrs Margaret Lacy, was held over the Royal Flying Doctor Service Radio on the 1st October 1971.

Margaret Lacy was elected President and Mrs Frances Smith took on the role of Secretary. These ladies along with many others worked so hard in the early years to make the branch a proactive and successful one.

Many Meekatharra Air members have held positions on Federal and State Councils over the years and the former Pedals Editor Mrs Raelene Hall is a Meekatharra Air member. Members have travelled to conferences across the state and nation to represent the branch as delegates and observers, putting and debating motions.

In 2002 the branch celebrated its 30th birthday with State Conference being held in Meekatharra. Members past and present gathered at the Meekatharra Shire Hall to acknowledge the past and continue the fight into the future.

Meekatharra Air branch meetings were previously held via computer using the School of the Air platform ‘Centra’ as the branch has always been linked with the Meekatharra School of the Air and this is just another way they have worked hand in hand. Recently we have tried Zoom quite effectively.

Membership numbers of the branch have varied greatly over the years but with a new crop of young families in the area with children to educate there is an ongoing need for a branch of ICPA to continue the fight for equitable education for rural and remote students.
